Real People, Real Stories: Family Care at Work
Sometimes you can measure success by a smile. Twenty-one year old Adam is living with Prader Willi Syndrome, a chromosomal disorder associated with an extreme and insatiable appetite which can result in several related health problems including morbid obesity, diabetes, and other conditions. Adam is enrolled in the Family Care program through Fond du Lac’s Creative Care Options.
Since February 2008, Adam has lost over 58 pounds. He’s reached this weight loss milestone with the help of a dietician at St. Agnes hospital, the staff at his Adult Family Home, and support from his family and his Interdisciplinary Team.
Adam participates in Special Olympics and often goes to state
competitions. He’s involved in the Kiwanis’ Aktion Club, where
he volunteers his time as a way to ‘give back’ to his community.
He also participated in the ASTOP protective behaviors group,
sponsored by ASTOP services and Creative Care Options. Adam is
now a happier young man, who is determined to meet his goals in life
and appreciates the support he has from his community, his
caregivers, his Interdisciplinary Team and his family.
